EXPLANATORY IMAGE: THE CLOCK IS TICKING
EVERY ABUSED CHILD IS ONE TOO MANY

They are kicked, struck, tortured and every third day, one of them dies. Right among us. Child abuse still is a sad reality in our country: Every day 11 children are put into the hospital and we have live with it. In every classroom there are 1-2 children who have or are experiencing sexual violence. That affects and moves us.

Basis for our acting forms the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child of the year 1989. We believe these children’s rights belong in our constitution. With special attention on the article 19, which speaks up against acts of violence, abuse, neglect and sexual violence targetting children.

Child protection is one of the largest “social construction sites” in our country. Child protection services are oriented more towards fixing than prevention, standards are lacking nationwide, we lack exchange and qualification in the training of the various agents. Structures which allow for these catastrophes to occur have to change in such a way that makes the state live up to its responsibility to protect children. Child protection must not move between fascination and indignation, between disinterest and ignorance. A thorough revision, improvement and redirection of child protection, orientated on the rights, needs and burdens of mistreated and sexually abused children is more important than ever.

Individual scenes and their meaning

Cyber grooming

In cyber grooming, children are directly targeted online in order to exploit them sexually and violently through conversations.

Sexual violence

The World Health Organization (WHO) suspects one million affected girls and boys each year, who fall or have fallen victim to sexual violence.

Acute threat to children’s well-being

In the year 2019 an acute threat to children’s well-being was ascertained in 27,980 children. Altogether, there were more than 173,000 cases of suspected threats.

Shaken Impact Syndrome

Estimates assume between 100 to 200 cases a year. Here, too, the dark figure is likely to be bigger.
